What “heat treated” actually means
Solid wood packaging used in international trade — pallets, crates, skids, dunnage and bracing — is covered by ISPM 15, an international phytosanitary standard. Its purpose is to prevent timber pests from moving between countries inside packaging material.
Heat treatment (HT) is the most common way to comply: the wood is heated in a chamber or kiln until the core of the board holds a specified temperature for a specified period. Treated material is then marked with the internationally recognized IPPC stamp, which identifies the treatment and the treatment provider.
Packaging that isn't compliant can be held, treated at the port at your expense, re-exported or destroyed — so the requirement is worth confirming with your freight forwarder or consignee before anything ships.
